Description
Shell's Mr. President Coin Game, James Monroe, 5th President, 1968 Shell Oil Advertising TokenIntroduced in 1968 the Shell Oil Company's "Mr. President" promotional contest tapped into the public fascination with the 1968 Presidential race between former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon and the incumbent Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. The game, as described on the outside of the game card folder shown below was a promotion where customers would receive a free "coin" with each visit to their local Shell Service Station. The "coins" were to be stored on the inside of a center-fold game card (NOT INCLUDED) until a winning grouping was assembled. They could then be redeemed for the advertised prize.
The game was simple on the surface – just collect coins and win prizes. Whenever you filled up with gas at a Shell station you received a one of 39 different aluminum president coins. You then placed your coin in the matching space provided on the official game card. The game card was divided into sections and if you could get all the president coins in any one of the sections, you won the prize indicated for that section.
Prizes ranged from to ,000 and you could also win a beautiful bronze set of presidential medals that came with a mounting board.
