The CREAM: 14 October 1967
Grande Ballroom, Detroit MI
Michael Canterbury for The Action Set:
Eric, Ginger, and Jack interviewed backstage at Detroit's most-famous '60s venue, the Grande Ballroom.
They take turns talking, although Ginger is hilarious, random and sometimes disconnected.
They discuss why touring the USA is better for them.
Ginger says band is just 1 year and 2-3 months together. They happened as an accident, not planned so much, met in a living room. There was high demand for them from the beginning, especially as they left well-known groups to form this. They could choose their manager, label, etc. Robert Stigwood connection, but they used to share Beatles manager, Brian Epstein until he died.
The London scene is avant garde, not like USA though, they find it better here.
Performing vs recording; it is very hard for them to record in studio. Where it takes 2 days in studio to get the right feel started, onstage takes 2 minutes to feel right.
They connect with audiences by doing their thing first together, not worrying about the crowd.
They don't carry light show, they are using Grande light show tonight.
Message in their music – and their musical influences when starting.
They have mainly American influences, Chuck Berry, BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Cyril Davies, Alexis Korner. They usually can't see other bands when on the road, they are too tired after their shows, physical effort. They discuss some of the bands out there.
What they do when they're playing onstage: How they listen to each other. Arrangements, audience.
No Canadian tour, back to London next week. Jack lived in Canada when young.
They know The Paupers.
Ginger does a station ID recording for The Action Set.
The pictures she show you everything but if you have any questions at all please feel free to ask.
